The independent journal of

Building Inspect

Independent reporting on Australian building inspections, defects and the houses we buy.

Editorial standards

Independence, corrections, sources, and the line between reporting and advice.

Building Inspect publishes journalism about Australian building inspections. These standards apply to staff copy, guest essays and sponsored explainers.

Independence

We do not take a commission on inspection bookings. We do not let selling agents, builders or treatment companies quietly edit copy. Advertisements and sponsored explainers are labelled. Paid links use rel="sponsored". A guest byline is not for sale.

Where a writer has a licence, a business, or a matter before a tribunal that a reasonable reader would want to know about, we disclose it at the end of the piece.

Not advice

Nothing on this site is legal, financial, engineering or pest-management advice about a particular property. Standards, contracts and case law change, and they change by state. For a house you are buying, hire an inspector, a conveyancer or solicitor, and any other specialist the report actually recommends.

Sources

We prefer primary documents: Australian Standards (described, not reproduced in full), the National Construction Code as publicly explained, state Fair Trading / QBCC / VBA / Building Commission material, and published tribunal reasons. We do not pretend to have inspected a house we have not inspected.

Anonymous inspectors can describe methods. They cannot describe a live job in enough detail to identify the client.

Australian English

We write in Australian English. Measurements are metric. Houses have timber, not lumber. Inspectors hold professional indemnity insurance, not “E&O” as a first label.

Corrections

If we get a fact wrong, email support@worldwidebacklinks.com or use the contact form with “Correction” as the topic. Include the URL, the sentence, and the evidence. We correct the article, note the change when it is material, and do not quietly rewrite history to save face.

Opinion is not a correction. “I would have called that crack minor” is a disagreement. “AS 4349.1 was withdrawn in 2019” would be a factual claim we would check.

Complaints

Editorial complaints follow the same channel. If the complaint is about a sponsored piece, say so. If it is about a staff writer’s conflict, say so. We will not correspond through a selling agent’s inbox about a report we did not write.

Take-down and defamation

We will consider legal notices in good faith. We will not remove a fair description of a public standard or a public tribunal decision because it is commercially inconvenient.

AI

Editors may use tools to check spelling and structure. We do not publish unverified machine-generated inspection advice. A guest who submits unedited chatbot copy will not be invited back.
