Building Inspect

Independent reporting on Australian building inspections, defects and the houses we buy.

Write for us

Guest contributors are welcome when they know the work. We publish inspections, defects, strata and standards — not advertorials dressed as advice.

Building Inspect accepts a small number of guest essays from licensed inspectors, pest technicians, structural engineers, strata managers, conveyancers and researchers who can write in Australian English for a general reader.

We are a journal, not a backlink farm. Pitches that exist to place a URL will be declined. Pitches that explain a defect, a standard, or a regional risk with the same care we expect of our staff will be read.

What we want

  • Reported explainers of 1,200 words or more on inspection practice, defects, timber pests, apartments, or climate risk.
  • First-person accounts of inspections that teach something (a missed subfloor, a cladding letter, a cyclone strap that was never there), with the identifying details of clients removed.
  • Clear explainers of public documents: AS 4349.1, AS 4349.3, AS 3660, state home-building law as it affects buyers, BAL ratings, flood overlays.

What we do not want

  • “Top ten inspectors in [suburb]” listicles.
  • Articles whose only purpose is a do-follow link to a booking form.
  • Legal or financial advice presented as if we were your solicitor or broker.
  • Material scraped from manufacturer brochures.
  • AI-generated copy that could have been written about any country.

How to pitch

Send a 150-word outline, a short bio, and two links to published writing (or two sample reports with client details removed) through our contact form. Put “Guest pitch” in the topic field. We reply when the outline is specific enough to commission.

Do not send a finished 3,000-word draft unsolicited unless you are happy for us to decline it unread. We would rather agree the angle first.

House style

  • Australian English. Colour, metre, licence (noun), organise, aluminium.
  • Name the standard. If you mean AS 4349.1, write AS 4349.1.
  • Distinguish observation from opinion. “The weepholes were bridged” is an observation. “The house is structurally unsound” is an opinion that usually belongs to an engineer.
  • No fake case studies. If you change names, say so.
  • Links to other Building Inspect articles are welcome. External links should help the reader.

Payment, rights and sponsored work

Staff and commissioned features are paid by agreement before writing starts. We buy first Australian electronic rights. You keep the right to reuse the work after 90 days, with a credit to Building Inspect.

We also accept a limited number of sponsored explainers. Those pieces are labelled “Sponsored” at the top of the article. Any commercial link in a sponsored piece, and any paid guest-post placement, is marked rel="sponsored". Editorial copy is not for sale.

Guest-post and sponsored enquiries can also be directed via Worldwide Backlinks, which handles commercially placed work for this masthead. That relationship is a paid placement channel and the link is rel="sponsored". It does not buy a staff byline or a change to our editorial standards.

After publication

We copy-edit for house style and law. We will not insert a booking widget into your piece. We will not let a vendor rewrite a defect out of existence. If a factual error gets through, we correct it under the policy on the standards page.

Commercially placed work is labelled. Paid guest-post enquiries also go through Worldwide Backlinks.
